James L. Smith

James L. Smith, Professor of Finance, joined the SMU faculty in 1995 as the Cary M. Maguire Chair of Oil and Gas Management at the Cox School of Business. He earned a B.S. degree at the University of Illinois, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Harvard University. Professor Smith was named a research fellow at the University of Oklahoma's Price College Energy Institute in 2015, and was twice named a visiting senior fellow of the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center, in Saudi Arabia. He was a research associate for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for Energy and Environment Policy Research from 2002-2013. In 2011- 2012, he was an International Monetary Fund visiting scholar. Prior to SMU, Professor Smith taught at the University of Houston, the University of Maryland, and the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. His academic and industry honors include serving as president of the United States Association for Energy Economics and editor of The Energy Journal. His work has been published in more than 60 academic and industry periodicals, and he has presented at over 110 international conferences. He retires as Professor Emeritus of Finance.
